Democracy is under assault.
Two authoritative barometers show that democracy around the world has been in decline for at least 15 years.
Fewer than one in 10 people live in full democracies, while more than a third of the world’s population live under authoritarian rule, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Freedom House’s democracy index fell for the 15th consecutive year in 2020, with countries experiencing deterioration outnumbering those with improvements by the largest margin since 2006. “The long democratic recession is deepening,” the NGO said.
While the coronavirus pandemic explains part of the recent deterioration in democratic institutions, other, long-term factors are at work: the expansion of authoritarian rule, aided by new, high-tech surveillance technologies; violent conflict; religious tensions.
